A QUIET MAN WHO PLAYED WITH REMARKABLE GRACE AND EFFICIENCY. ACHIEVEMENTS AND HONORS. INDUCTED INTO THE NATIONAL BASEBALL HALL OF FAME IN 1949. BATTED OVER .300 IN 13 OF HIS 16 FULL SEASONS WITH A LIFETIME BATTING AVERAGE OF .320. NAMED AL MVP IN 1937 AFTER HITTING .371 TO LEAD THE LEAGUE. LED THE AL IN 1929 IN HITS, RUNS, DOUBLES, TRIPLES, STOLEN BASES, GAMES, PUTOUTS AND FIELDING PERCENTAGE. HIT 15 OR MORE HOME RUNS IN A SEASON SIX TIMES AND HAD 100 OR MORE RBI SEVEN TIMES. DRILLED 80 DOUBLES IN 1936 SETTING A TIGER RECORD FOR LEFT-HANDED HITTERS. BATTED .375 AND HANDLED 39 CHANCES WITHOUT AN ERROR IN 1935 WORLD SERIES.
