Plaque on wall behind statue: STAN CULLIS. Stan Cullis was born in Ellesmere Port on 25th October 1916. He joined Wolves in February 1934 and was destined to stay for 30 years. He contributed hugely to Wolves' glorious achievements as a player, captain and manager, and his introduction of floodlit football to this country at Molineux ultimately led to the creation of the European Cup. Under Cullis' management from 1949 to 1960 Wolves were three times champions of Division One, twice FA Cup winners and three times League runners-up. 1935 Debut for Wolves v Huddersfield 16th February 1935. 1937 Won first of 12 full England caps before his 21st birthday. Also played in 20 wartime internationals. 1939 Captained Wolves to First Division runners-up place and Wembley Cup Final v Portsmouth (Wolves 1 Portsmouth 4). England's youngest captain aged 22 v Romania in Bucharest. 1947 Retired as player after 171 appearances for Wolves (excluding wartime). 1948 Appointed Wolves manager on 18th June 1948. 1949 Wolves won FA Cup v Leicester 3-1 and Cullis became the youngest ever Cup Final manager, aged 32. 1954 Wolves won First Division title for the first time and also played the first of several memorable Molineux floodlit matches, achieving victories over top European teams Honved (Hungary) 3-2 and Spartak (Russia) 4-0. 1957 Wolves beat European Champions Real Madrid 3-2 in a friendly at Molineux and draw return leg 2-2. 1958 Wolves Division One League champions for the second time. 1959 Wolves League champions for the second successive season. 1960 Wolves FA Cup winners at Wembley, beating Blackburn 3-0. Runners-up in the league. 1961 Wolves scored 100 goals for 4th successive season. 1964 Cullis' reign as the "Iron Manager" brought to an abrupt end by his dismissal on 14th September 1964. 1992 Newly rebuilt North Bank Stand renamed Stan Cullis Stand by Wolves owner and president, Sir Jack Hayward, 1st August. This statue was conceived and presented by Sir Jack Hayward CBE, Wolves' President and Chairman, in gratitude and recognition of the magnificent contribution made by Stan Cullis to the glorious history of Wolverhampton Wanderers.
