Plaque: Walter Tull. 1888 - 1918. Walter Tull built a career as top division footballer. He became the second professional black player in the Football League and transferred from Tottenham to Northampton Town Football Club in 1911. On the outbreak of war in 1914, Tull enlisted in the Army. He fought in conflicts in Italy and France, including the Battle of the Somme, and after impressing his superiors he became the first black Officer in the British Army. Tull was killed in action in France in 1918.
