By the time of his retirement from International Cricket in 1994, AB had become the world's leading Test run scorer and most capped Test player. Following his International retirement, he continued to play domestic Cricket and in March 1995 was part of QLD's much celebrated maiden Sheffield Shield winning team. Allan was voted Australian of the Year in 1990 and made an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) in 1994. He served on the National Selection Panel, coached Australia A, and was a Cricket Australia and Queensland Cricket Board Director. In ultimate recognition of his importance to the game and to Australian sport in general, the award presented to Australia's best player every year is known as the Allan Border Medal.
