Testing for Mediation and Moderation using SPSS

Friday 6th January 2017; 9.15am to 5.15pm
at Birkbeck College: Room G15, Malet Street Building

This course is promoted by Falcon Training

NOTE - this course requires you to bring your own laptop with SPSS installed - any of versions v18 onwards will do.

Who is the course aimed at?
This course is aimed at those with basic knowledge of simple multiple regression analysis and SPSS software who wish to upgrade their skills to testing more advanced models involving mediated or moderated relationships, using standard SPSS commands and the popular PROCESS macro.

Course level:
A minimal basic knowledge of SPSS software and a basic understanding of standard multiple regression (e.g. understanding what an R-squared statistic is, and what intercept and slope coefficients represent) will be advantageous to participants. No previous knowledge or experience with running mediation or moderation type models is assumed.

Course content and aims:
The course will cover the following topics:

  • Introduction to mediated relationships - what are they and why do we need to test them?
  • Methods for testing mediated relationships
  • Introduction to the PROCESS macro
  • Testing for simple indirect effects using PROCESS
  • Testing multiple mediators using PROCESS
  • Introduction to moderated relationships - what are they and why do we need to test them?
  • Testing, plotting and probing moderated relationships using PROCESS
  • Advanced mediation models and moderated mediation
  • Testing moderated mediation models using PROCESS

The course comprises of a couple of short lectures on the basic theory behind mediation and moderation, teaching via examples worked through by the trainer on real data sets which participants can follow, and exercises to practice the skills just learned. You will also receive an 80-page coursebook containing all the notes and worked examples, providing an easy reference for the basics of performing mediation and moderation testing in SPSS, and as a reminder for the techniques you have learned.

Course schedule: The course will start at 9.15am, with a lunch break from 1pm-2pm, and short coffee breaks at 11.30am and 3.30pm. It will finish at around 5.15pm, though I will be willing to stay on for a while after this and to answer questions pertinent to participants' own data sets or any other multi-level modelling queries you may have.

    The teacher:
Dr Chris Stride has been using SPSS in his work as a statistician and data manager for the last 15 years. He has particular experience and expertise in teaching non-statisticians from the fields of psychology, HR, management and the social sciences. Chris is a Chartered Statistician and a member of the ASSESS (UK SPSS Users' Group) Committee; and has run almost 100 public training courses around the world, as well as for the UK SPSS users group, at national and international conferences, and on an inhouse basis for Universities and the public sector.

    The venue, facilities and directions:
The course is to be held in room G15 in Birkbeck College's Malet Street building, in the heart of London. It is 2 minutes walk from Russell Square underground station (Piccadilly Line) and 10-15 minutes walk from any of Euston, Kings Cross or St Pancras International stations.
